In which conditions is Dirty Racer developed ?

Dirty Racer is a video game prototype developed during the last year of studies in Supinfogame (a France-based Game Design & Production Management school).
It's one of the 4 projects chosen by the jury and developed this year.


GAME CONCEPT

Overview:

  • Type : Arcade Racing-game
  • Platform : PC / Xbox 360
  • Multiplayer : from 2 to 8 players (Online / LAN)
  • Market target : +12 years old


Concept:

  • Dirty Racer is the first racing game in which you care in a first place about your windshield! It is an entirely first-person viewed multiplayer racing game. The opponents face each other in buggy races where they will have to keep focused, sharp and cold-blooded for the core of the game is about visibility. These races take place in different types of environments that will influence the player’s vision of the road.


Gameplay: Stain / visibility:

  • The player drives a buggy during furious arcade races. These races are in real-time 3D and in first-person view (pilot view). That’s why players will have to keep their windshield as clean as possible for it’s their only way to see the road!
  • Windshield’s Dirtiness: during a race there are two ways for the windshield to be made dirty: simply because of the environment or because of opponents. One can use either an appropriate bonus, either the environment or even the wipers.
  • The more dirt there is on the windshield, the faster the car will go but it will also loose adhesion gradually.
  • Wipers: can be used as soon as the race starts. Can be used to wipe a part of the dirt away from the windshield. Can be activated any time but will become less and less efficient.
  • Getting the head out:if the windshield is too dirty the player can get is head out of the buggy. However he will lose some visibility (blur on the screen), he won’t be able to use his bonus and it will be harder for him to handle his car.


Gameplay: Bonus System:

  • Bonus appear on the road, to get them you only need to drive over it and activate it whenever you want. A taken bonus replaces the previous one.
  • These bonus have different effects: they affect either the player’s visibility, either the buggy itself, either the opponents. The bonus system is based on the environment and the visibility.


Gameplay: Interactive Environments:

  • Some elements of the tracks are interactive, they can be activated either :
    - By collision: if a player smashes in a trunks heap the trunks will roll on the road and provide new obstacles for the opponents behind.
    - By using the horn: the player can use it anytime.
    - Or are activated automatically: when players enter a specific zone.


Gameplay: The vehicle's status:

  • The vehicles' Status is symbolised by the windshield’s status. It breaks apart gradually as the opponents smash each other or hit obstacles.
  • If the car is wrecked, the player has a few seconds before it completely stops to place the wreck where he wants to provide a new obstacle.
  • Once the car is wrecked and stopped, it starts making heavy smoke, blocking the view on a certain perimeter around it.


Gameplay: The Races:

  • The races’ tracks, like some obstacles are semi-unpredictable to provide a maximum replay value to the tracks.
  • Race types :
    - Dirty Race: normal multiplayer race on a track, first wins the race.
    - The Dirty One: an opponent starts in first position but cannot pick-up any bonus. The other ones start the race a few seconds after and already have a bonus. They can pick-up other bonus. The first opponent gone before the others must finish the race first.
    - The Dirtiest: the players fight each other on a straight line in a race where the goal is to finish in the first places but also gather as much dirt as he can.


Gameplay: Controls:

  • Player’s Actions:
    - The player can turn by using the left thumb stick.
    - He can move the camera with the right thumb stick.
    - He can accelerate and brake with the two triggers.
    - He can use the bonus he picked-up.
    - He can wash his winder shield with the wipers.
    - He can use his horn to activate some contextual elements (falling rocks, etc…)


Gameplay: Misc:

  • Several customisable vehicles (visually) of buggy type with the same engine and characteristics.
  • In-Game scenarisation : all visual datas are displayed on the cockpit : bonus picked-up, position, speed, and so on…


Game's Universe:

  • Real time 3D in a realistic universe.
  • All the tracks take place on 3 different environments : mud, sand or snow.
  • Race sound atmosphere; techno music, rock or pop, very punchy rythme.



Unique Selling Points :

  • First-person Racing Game.
  • Visibility as the core of the gameplay.
  • Use interactive elements of the tracks as « weapons ».
